As the link between stress and illness becomes more apparent, it is increasingly important for healthcare providers to be aware of the variety of stress-related symptoms that can manifest in patients and become knowledgeable about effective stress management techniques, namely mind-body approaches. Mind-body interventions, which are rooted in ancient history, are more widely turned to today to complement traditional Western medicine as they are often lower in cost than standard care and extremely efficacious in the treatment of a variety of diseases (e.g., heart disease, headaches, low-back pain), as well as in the amelioration of treatment-related symptoms (e.g., those caused by chemotherapy), just to name a few applications. This online CE course summarizes the impact of stress on health and wellness, and presents the current state-of-the-science of common mind-body interventions - including relaxation, meditation, and yoga - as a means to managing stress, preventing disease and promoting health. Research findings from the mind-body literature will be presented and implications for clinical practice will be considered.
